When To Call

You can be arrested and charged with a crime, even if you are innocent.

When the police say you have a right to an attorney, you should say "YES, I want an attorney." This stops the questions. If you continue to talk, law enforcement will listen and record everything you say and then ask you to say it again. The police look for changes, big and small to your statement. Be careful, choose to say, "I want an attorney." If the police are questioning you, they will use everything you said in your trial.

If the police say you have the right to remain silent, STOP talking. The criminal case is focusing on you and you need an attorney. Later, you can always provide a statement in writing with the assistance of your attorney.

Major life changes, personal or family, often have significant legal implications that are better handled with the assistance of an attorney.
